The Nürburgring was awarded the two-star environmental accreditation by the FIA, the world motorsport association. Following an extensive testing process, the awards included the circuit's commitment and initiatives for environmental sustainability and its action plan for continuous improvement. The FIA Environmental Accreditation Program aims to support motorsport and mobility stakeholders worldwide to measure and improve their environmental impact through an assessment process.
The team at the Nurburgring said: "We are pleased that our commitment has been recognized by the FIA with environmental accreditation," explain the managing directors of Nürburgring 1927 GmbH & Co. KG, Christian Stephani and Ingo Böder. "As a world-renowned racetrack and event location, as well as a private company and regional economic engine, we strive to reconcile economy and ecology and thus meet the diverse requirements."
As part of the test procedure, the Nürburgring 1927 GmbH & Co. KG scored in various subject areas. This included 100% green electricity from hydroelectric power plants, investments in solar energy and intelligent measuring systems for efficient building energy control. Investments in charging station infrastructure for electric vehicles also had a positive impact. This permanently installed infrastructure is available to all visitors to the Nürburgring and is to be further expanded. It is currently being temporarily expanded for events if necessary.
With regard to noise emissions, there is a comprehensive noise protection concept with individual measures at the Nürburgring. Compliance is checked by permanent noise monitoring, the data of which is transmitted to an independent institute for monitoring emissions. The race track operators voluntarily set a noise limit below the actually approved volume. Other fields of action within which the Nürburgring implements continuous improvement processes and plans optimizations are the careful use of water as a resource and responsible waste management.
With the certification achieved, the Nürburgring 1927 GmbH & Co. KG is pleased about an intermediate step. The clear goal of the company is to further optimize and expand the measures. In this way, a contribution should also be made in terms of environmental protection, so that the Nürburgring is a place of fascination, emotions and meeting place for people from all over the world for many more generations to come.
